For some the sailing season may be coming to an end and the coming winter is a reminder to make sure your boat is protected from freezing temperatures before they make their appearance. Even if you use your boat all winter - a practice which we definitely support - there are some systems and items that need more attention.
What do you need to "winterize" the boat?
Here are the essential tools and products a boat owner may need for the winter:
Antifreeze
Lubricant
Fuel stabilizer
Oil filter
Oil seals
Oil suction pump
FLUSH AND DRAIN THE WATER LINES
Water expands under extremely cold winter temperatures causing damage. Be sure to drain water from the engine cooling systems, hydraulic system or any other water holding system. Flush the engine using water until the engine reaches optimum operating temperature.
REPLACE ENGINE OIL AND FILTERS
Different engines require different materials and methods. Regardless, it is essential to check the operator's manual for requirements and ask your technician.
Change all fluids and filters as needed. Make sure the correct levels, including oil, coolant, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and supercharger.
Inspect the fuel lines for cracks and stiffness and replace any lines that show signs of wear.
Lubricate all moving parts.
ADD FUEL STABILIZER
Fuel wears out over a short lifespan resulting in poor performance and engine damage. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel. Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel injector or carburetor.
APPLY ANTI-CORROSION PROTECTION TO ENGINES
MAKE SURE WATER IS REMOVED FROM ALL ADDITIONAL SYSTEMS (raw water washes, wells, bilge pump, etc.).
